Prospective Members of the LHS Wind Symphony,
Please note that ALL students are welcome to be a part of the band program at Lakeland Sr. High School regardless of talent, ability, or experience. All are welcome to the concert bands and Dreadnaught Marching Band programs. You only need audition if you are interested in being in Lakeland High School’s top performing ensemble, the Wind Symphony. If you have a desire to make great music with friends, you’re in the right place. The purpose for auditioning students is to ensure that they are placed in a learning environment that is best suited to their current aptitude and to ensure that both the Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony are well balanced ensembles with appropriate instrumentation. Both groups perform throughout the year and are evaluated at the Florida Bandmasters Association’s Music Performance Assessment in March of 2021.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will have to be a little more innovative with our audition procedure. Thus, all auditions will be video recorded and submitted via email to the Director. Auditions must be received by Friday, May 29, 2020 at 2:00 PM to be considered for the Wind Symphony. New students to Lakeland High School must also complete a “Student Information Sheet” along with their audition videos. All videos need to be submitted as a mp4 or mov file type. When saving the video file, use your last name and first initial along with the video title. For example, if I were submitting the Etude video, I would name the file “Hart L Etude.” The Scale video would follow the same procedure, “Hart L Major Scales.” The Chromatic video would be saved as “Hart L Chromatic Scale.” Students can also submit links to a YouTube video of their performance. Make sure that the video shows your entire body to ensure proper posture and performance technique.
Here is a checklist to ensure you submit all items needed:
Etude Video
7+ Major Scales Video
1-2 Octave Chromatic Scale Video

Each video will be evaluated in 5 main areas: notes, rhythm, articulation, dynamics, and tone quality. Each category will be given a score between 1 and 5. 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest score. Students will be given extra points for additional octaves achieved in the scales.
As always, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
